Peg Bowen was an old woman from Avonlea.
Because the inhabitants were superstitious, they sometimes referred to Peg Bowen as a witch, which is why she was also called "The Witch of Avonlea".
Actually, she was harmless, but when she was annoyed, she was very mischievous and vindictive. The winter she spent in a small hut in the forest, but outside the winter she roamed through the countryside. She went barefoot and smoked whistle. Occasionally she let herself look in the church of Avonlea and sprinkled her face, her arms and her legs with flour.
